  • My Take: The Bible really does condemn homosexuality

    May 21st 2011

[Note: One doesn't expect to see an uncompromising statement regarding the Bible's condemnation of homosexual sex featured prominently on CNN. com. But on March 3, 2011, that's exactly what happened. While we may not agree 100% with all of what Dr. Gagnon writes, he makes some thought-provoking statements. What do you think?]

By Robert A. J. Gagnon, Special to CNN

Robert A.J. Gagnon, Ph.D.CNN Editor’s Note: Robert A. J. Gagnon, Ph.D., is associate professor of New Testament at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and author of The Bible and Homosexual Practice: Texts and Hermeneutics and (with Dan Via) Homosexuality and the Bible: Two Views.

In her recent CNN Belief Blog post “The Bible’s surprisingly mixed messages on sexuality,” Jennifer Wright Knust claims that Christians can’t appeal to the Bible to justify opposition to homosexual practice because the Bible provides no clear witness on the subject and is too flawed to serve as a moral guide.

As a scholar who has written books and articles on the Bible and homosexual practice, I can say that the reality is the opposite of her claim. It’s shocking that in her editorial and even her book, “Unprotected Texts,” Knust ignores a mountain of evidence against her positions.

  • Can We Depend on Media Reports?

Gay marriage has been accepted in Canada since July, 2005. From media reports, one would think that probably ten or fifteen percent of marriages in Canada were between people of the same sex. Statistics Canada (2006) listed six out of a thousand marriages as being between same sex couples. That is just over one-half of one percent.

People tell me that in Social Media such as Facebook, being gay is cool. If this is the case, my guess is that many people who register as either gay or bi are just doing it as a stunt and do not realize the implications of putting themselves into a box. Could it be a self-fulfilling prophecy?

Just for discussion’s sake, let’s say that about half the population is straight, A low percentage is gay and the rest cover a wide spectrum between. For the latter group, would sexual encounters skew their thinking? Because it felt good, could a person identify himself/herself incorrectly? Could incorrect labeling be a self-fulfilling prophecy?

    What are your thoughts?

  • Sins of Sodom

Many Christians believe that homosexuality is the worst of sins because, after all, God destroyed Sodom for it, didn’t He? But does the Bible really say this?

For the sake of completeness, I have done a digital search of the Bible for all references to Sodom. I haven’t copied them all in this post because many references were simply a means of warning Israel regarding the kind of destruction that they themselves deserved because of their sins. (Unless indicated otherwise, all quoted texts are from the KJV.) Read More

As a Christian, how do you answer that question?

Being same-sex attracted, Tim felt that he was “gay.” So when a Andrew asked him, “Are you gay,” he got that deer-caught-in-the-headlights look, which was a give-away even without the “yes” that followed. Read More

  • Is homosexuality a sin?

Most conservative Christians answer Yes to that question. And same-sex-attracted persons listening feel condemned because they understand homosexuality to be their sexual orientation, just like heterosexuality is a sexual orientation.

But when conservative Christians say “homosexuality,” they usually think of gay sex, rather than sexual orientation. And that creates a lot of misunderstanding. Read More

As a crisis line volunteer, I took a phone call from a mother who had been sexually abused as a child. She told me about the abuse and it soon became apparent that she was blaming all her problems onto the abuse. She told me about the hard financial times that she was facing.  I could hear a child crying in the background. It was obvious that she was overwhelmed with frustrations. Read More

David probably looks pretty confident to most people, but he writes about his problem of dealing with attention from other men. “I’m just about as insecure as the next guy. I mean, I hold my own in a discussion, I conduct choirs and orchestras with a minimum of challenges, I speak in front of groups about the Bible with no trouble at all, I can even handle a classroom full of junior high kids for 80 minutes at a time.” Read more at his blog, “Gay and Evangelical.”

Many Christians believe that “homosexual behavior” is the worst of sins and that God hates homosexuals, based on Leviticus 18, 22 and Leviticus 20:13, where same-sex intercourse is called an “abomination.”

Does the Bible really justify this conclusion? Read More
